What is Schrödinger’s Cat?


Suppose you put your cat in a steel box that contains a mechanism of a radioactive material and some poison. If the radioactive decay hit 50% then the poison will spread. About 30 min later there are 50% chance of radioactive decay which will spread the poison and the cat will die. If there is no decay then the cat will survive. Now as long as the box is closed we can’t see the cat either its dead or alive. So we can say it’s both alive and dead. So how can we know either its dead or alive without opening the box? For the past 100 years some best mind of this planet has tried to solve this puzzle. Its puzzle was proposed by an Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger. And since then this puzzle is called Schrödinger’s cat puzzle. May be this cat is the most famous cat in the history.


What is it trying to prove?


In general this puzzle is trying to show the imperfection of Quantum mechanics. In quantum mechanics all atomic elementary particles are in “superposition”. Which means the nucleus of a particle is constantly decaying and not decaying at the same time. If we look at the puzzle we can see the cat is both dead and alive at the same time. But when we open the box we won’t see the cat is both dead and alive at a same time. Only one of them can occur at one single space time. Just like that when we are observing a particle it can’t be in two stages at a time. Because when we observe an object it acquires one specific object.


The physics between this puzzle.


When we monitor a particle sometimes we can see it making quantum leap, what is adaptation from one space to another. Actually this jump happens all the time, like someone is pushing a button constantly. In early 90 scientist thought that a particle goes in a straight line before perform this action. But recently scientist proves that quantum leap like a shift lever not a button. By using this information we can predict whether the cat will survive or not. We just have to use the information of before the particle leap. There are more. Quantum leap can be reversed and we can change its direction. In general we can control the quantum state of a particle. Which means not only we can save the cat’s life buts also can bring the cat from dead!


Let’s take a different approach.


Remember we were talking about bring something from dead by just changing the quantum state of a particle? Sorry to say this but there is a slight problem. We can’t move the make the particle move by our hand or anything like that. And atomic level particle is so sensitive that only a single photon can change its direction. This means we can’t even observe the particle we want to play with using light. We also can’t determine the quantum state of the particle. So in this way we can’t solve the puzzle. But there is another way to look at the particle without distorting it.  At the very beginning stage before placing the cat inside the box, if we look the cat then we will see the cat is emitting photon without any lose of information. So at this stage we can confirm that the cat is alive or not without any problem. But at the second stage half of the information is eliminated as false. Because as we all know the cat can’t be at two forms at a same time. So what happens here is one of these probabilities cancel the rest. Now let’s put the cat inside the box. But after 30 min instead of getting it out we can place a camera inside which can take a picture of the cat. The image will give us two types of data. The first type shows the change of the cat during the interaction with poison. And the second image will be the state of the cat, wheather it’s still alive or not. Until the both types of information are observed, they are not clear to us. Again it also depends on the order of the information processing. We can do only one thing at one time, either the change of the cat or the state of the cat. When one of these information is known the other will deleted automatically. But until one of these two is processed the cat is in a position which is called Quantum Superposition. We can simply refer it with tossing a coin the air. There are some complex probabilities in tossing coin. They are- 

A. The coin is in air and flipping.

B. The coin is on the ground showing head or tail.

It is impossible to observe them at a same time. This is how the scientists are able to see the quantum system without distortion which occurs every time observing it. Whatever, by discovering this method there is a big question arise. By the following principal the cat is not only dead or alive at a same time, but also it can be also in two different boxes. As soon as we interfere with the box all of these information will narrow down to only one, which is the cat is either dead or alive.


Is it possible that a particle is both matter and energy at a same time using the Heisenberg’s principal?


By the way, these entire quantum features is related to temperature. Scientists have proved that at a quantum state a particle can have two complete different temperatures at the same time. This discovery was possible by Heisenberg’s Uncertain Principal. By the principal it is impossible to determine both of the temperature and the energy of a particle at the same time. Cause to achieve the accurate temperature, the particle has to place in a tank of cold water which’s temperature is already known. And now by placing the particle in the tank the water will lose or gain some temperature, which will allow us to determine the exact temperature of the particle. But by doing this we can measure the energy of the particle as it is continuously giving and receiving energy from the water. In the other hand if we try to measure its energy we have to isolate the particle, but by doing so, we cannot measure its temperature because it’s isolate from other particles. But in Quantum world things work differently. Normally the temperature of a particle varies from 0.5°C. But doing some math using the Schrödinger’s Cat theory the particle does not contain two temperatures but it feels like there are two particles in a same place at a same time. 

All of these things are possible for an imaginary cat which leads us to a new step of quantum mechanics which seems impossible for us about couple hundred years ago. Quantum computer, Nano technology all of these are possible for this cat puzzle.
